What is compounding?

PHARMACY COMPOUNDING IS THE ART AND SCIENCE OF PREPARING CUSTOMISED MEDICATIONS FOR PATIENTS.

Pharmacy compounding is the traditional role of the pharmacist and involves the preparation of medicines in different dosage forms to fill the needs of a specific patient according to the practitioner’s instruction. In the early 1900’s the pharmaceutical industry began manufacturing a myriad of drugs in various dosage forms and the need for compounded medications diminished. Today, compounding is experiencing a resurgence and many patients need customised dosage forms to solve specific medical problems that they may be having with their current treatment. Innovative techniques and research have allowed more pharmacists to customise medications to meet specific patients’ needs.

For example- if a person is unable to take medication orally, we may be able to assist by placing the medication in a transdermal cream that will allow absorption of the drug through the skin. Some individuals are unable to take a commercial product due to its sugar/alcohol content, dye or specific preservative.

We can solve the problem by compounding a customised dosage form without including the problem-causing agent.

Is compounding legal?

Is compounding legal?

Compounding has been part of healthcare since the origins of pharmacy and has recently experienced a resurgence, largely because of advances in technology and research methodology.

Compounded prescriptions are both ethical and legal as long as no such preparation is commercially available and they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner and compounded by a registered pharmacy with experience in compounding.

Today, the US FDA and TGA (Aus) acknowledge compounding as a practice centred around the practitioner-patient-pharmacist triad and accept the scope and function of pharmacy compounding as an integral part of the pharmaceutical industry.

Association of Compounding Pharmacists of South African (ACPSA)

The ACPSA was formed in 2013 with the main aim to promote, preserve and advocate for the growing practice of pharmacy compounding, as well as to promote and facilitate communications with the regulatory authorities, with the public and with other interest groups on matters concerning pharmacy compounding.

The ACPSA consists of pharmacists with a special interest in compounding. Their efforts are set on establishing a consistent system of quality standards. Although membership is voluntary, all leading compounding pharmacies in South Africa are represented. Earning ACPSA membership shows that a pharmacy is dedicated to upholding ethical practices.

What pharmacy compounding is not...It is illegal to copy and manufacture registered medicine and advertise it as compounded medication.
